The University of Pikeville (蝴蝶直播) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) will launch a new major in medical humanities that will allow students a competitive edge in the healthcare industry, which is the fastest growing in the economy today.
Set to begin during the spring semester of 2024, the medical humanities program will be aimed at those students who plan to pursue healthcare support careers. The new degree will include a palette of interdisciplinary classes in public health, sociology, history and religious studies and build a bridge between the art and science of medicine.
Rob Musick, DMin, chaplain and instructor of religious studies through the CAS at 蝴蝶直播, will be the new coordinator of the latest medical humanities program. He said the new major will prepare students for medical school and other careers in healthcare.
鈥淢edical humanities empowers students to engage with medicine and healthcare in a more holistic way. So often, we think that the healthcare industry is only for nurses and doctors. Yet, medical humanities equips students to fully support healing and work within the healthcare system through a vast understanding of the heart, mind, and soul of medicine,鈥 said Musick. 鈥淭his major will allow all to participate in the healthcare industry and the call to heal.鈥
蝴蝶直播 Provost Lori Werth, Ph.D., encourages undergraduate students at 蝴蝶直播 who are interested in broadening their understanding of science and medicine at the intersection of culture, ethics and history to pursue a new additional major in medical humanities.
鈥淭he new major in medical humanities at 蝴蝶直播 will bring a foundational understanding of the life sciences to students in the humanities and social sciences, in case they want to go into fields like public health,鈥 said Werth. 鈥淭his program will build upon the university鈥檚 strengths across the academic disciplines and will focus on solving the biggest problems of our time in humanities and healthcare.鈥
